BLACK SEPTEMBER OF THE WORLD – 911 TO G30S – SO WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS?

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rest
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

This song always rings on my head whenever the month of September comes. Of course, not all memories in September are gloomy…my royalty’s check still came at the first day of month, which is perfect so I could buy a present for my son that had birthday this month, no mention about my teacher that finally getting married as well – finally, you’ve got the page at the right time, ma’am – and other joyfully moment that will come the ends of September…
But I couldn’t agree more that September is a month that has many dark stories in it, you name it, wars, terrorist attacks, or even murder are either already or unresolved until now. So here’s the situation in Indonesia and around the world:

  1. The Assault of Zodiac Killer (1969)
Bryan Calvin Hartnell (20 yrs) and Cecilia Ann Sheppard (22 yrs) on 27 September 1969 was attacked with a knife at Lake Berryessa Napa County. Hartnell survived eight puncture but Sheppard died from injuries she suffered in two days later. Besides the two, Donna Lass (25 yrs) was last seen on September 6, 1970 in Stateline, Nevada.

Zodiac Killer was a serial killer who operated in the areas of Northern California in the period of 1960-1970. Although he claimed conducting 37 murders in newspapers but based on the evidence police believe the serial killer actually just killed 7 people, not as much as in the claims with the intention of scaring the public.

Police described the killer as a very intelligent person and detailed in a murder so it’s not that easy to solve the case. Zodiac’s name was given because that word continues to be used as a signature in a series of letters which contain with mocking tone, especially to the police, which he sent to local media. The letter contains four passwords and only one course already be described. Until now no one knows the real identity of the killer.

the information of witness
The actions of Zodiac Killer has inspired filmmakers American and his awful story then filmed for the first time in 1971 in the form of a documentary, followed by other film like Dirty Harry in 1971. The one I thought as the coolest is Zodiac (2007), played by duo whiz Marvel, the Iron Man - Robert Downey Jr. and The Hulk - Mark Ruffallo.

  1. The Battle of Arab League – Jordan vs Palestinian (1970)
The tragedy known as Black September, it’s broke out between the dates of 16-27 September 1970 between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) led by Yasser Arafat and the army led by King Hussein of Jordan as a result of the cold war in the Arab country.

When Palestinians had trouble to attack Israel because of the increase of strict safeguards finally they target targets people besides Israel. PFLP terrorists led by George Habash on 10 September 1970 hijack 3 aircraft conducting flights in the north Aman, the Jordanian capital, as well. Israel is not the plane hijacked Boeing 747 but PAN American Flight 93 (Brussels - New York), Boeing B707 TWA Flight 741 (Frankfurt-New York), and DC-8 Swissair Flight 100 (Zurich - New York). Total third passenger plane was 400 people.

Hostage drama ended with the departure of terrorists without getting any of their demands, but before leaving they burned the three aircrafts. Arson that makes Jordanian ruler, King Hussein, felt being underestimated so he ordered his troops to repel and kill Palestinians residing in the township of Jordan.

The Jordanian army cruelness made new vengeance. Palestinian counterattack against the atrocities and during 11 days of fighting and there might be massive death which estimated 3,400 in Jordanian side and 5,000 of the Palestinian, mostly were civilians.

  1. The Munich Olympics Massacre (1972)
On September 4, 1972, Black September organization launched a military operation codenamed operation Berim Ikrit. The operation is for kidnapping a number of Israeli athletes at Olympic Village during the 1972 Olympics in Munich.

The hostel was located near Furstenfeldburch Airport, Olympic Village Connolystrasse Apartment, Block 31, Muenchen, adjacent to Hong Kong’s athlete dormitories and Uruguay. The attack occurred in the area at 04.30 at dawn when Israeli athletes were being sleep soundly.

Yossef Gutfreud, wrestling athletes, was the first man who had a haunch about the invasion, so he scream to warn all his friend to get out from the apartment while he held the door so that the gunmen were not signed. Two men escaped while the other eight decided to hide inside.

After holding nine Israeli athletes, the members of Black September operation make demands to release 234 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli’s jails and 2 leaders of Ultra groups, Badeer-Meinhoff from West German’s jail, in addition a safe escape route from Germany’s prison to Egypt's area

21-hour of hostage drama ended with helicopter explosions which bring the death of all hostages, three members of Black September, and a West German policeman. The tragedy was painful for all parties, especially Israel who lost Yossef Gutfreud (wrestling), Mosche Weinberg (wrestling coach), Yossef Romano (lifter), David Mark Berger, Mark Slavin, Jacov Springer (referee weightlifting), Andre Spitzer (fencing), Kohath Shorr, Elieszer Halfin, Amitzur Shapira, and Zeev Friedman.

Steven Spielberg later picked up the story of this tragedy in the movie of Munich (2005), starring by Eric Bana and written by Tony Kushner and Eric Rothm which adapted from the novel Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter - Terrorist work of Canadian journalist George Jonas.

  1. World Trade Center Tragedy (2001)
It had to be the most advanced attacking plan in the history of terrorism and US security failed to secure their perimeter when four suicide attacks with four hijacked planes invaded the heart of New York and Washington D.C., destroyed the twin towers of World Trade Centre (WTC) and half of Pentagon’s building.

The attack recorded 3,000 people had died instantly and made American economy paralyzed for 2-3 days. Some insurance companies also lose considerable amounts of having to pay claims for damage caused by the attack.

The investigation was held involving thousands of FBI agents and they found the hijackers were members of Al-Qaeda led by Osama Bin Laden. President George Bush wins the sympathy from public and U.S Senates to unified Americans against terrorism that he claimed coming from Middle East.

On the other hand, five days later Osama Bin Laden’s video broadcast and he declares himself innocent and he was being accused as a scapegoat. Meanwhile construction experts who conducted a series of studies of WTC’s explode also doubts the building destruction as a result of being hit by planes.

  1. The Murder of Jill Meagher (2012)
Jill Meagher was an immigrant from Ireland who worked as a staff in ABC’s office, one of Australia media. On one evening in September 2012 she just got home from the office and walked back to her apartment when she was intercepted by a man who dragged him out of the road to the alley then raped and killed her.

The culprit named Adrian Ernest Bailey (41 yrs) was on parole after being convicted of raping five women at once after undergoing a jail term of 8 years.

Judge Geoffrey Nettle were sentenced 35 years of imprisonment without the possibility of parole saying that this is the worst murder case in the history of Victoria region in Australia. It’s very brutal and degrading. Therefore, the long sentence was also intended to make Bailey rehabilitate himself.

Jill’s murder brought hard blow to his family, his father, George McKeon and her husband, Tom Meagher.

And, here are some gloomy events that happened in Indonesia during September:

  1. G30S PKI (1965)

The aggression of Indonesia Communist Party (PKI) who accused for making a coupe by military on behalf of President Soekarno’s government. There are 11 different versions that tried their very best to explain what really happened in the darkest years of Indonesian history to the public, but no one holds the version because it’s contradiction one another. Whatever those are, the aggression taking a live of seven brave men who murdered brutally before thrown to the pit named Lubang Buaya.

But the reaction followed by genocide, a massive murdered was done by military as a retaliation, and they killed many people who considered as the lackeys of PKI across the nation without even bother to make trial altogether.

Many student who’re being study abroad to China and Russia were not allowed to go back to Indonesia because they were suspected of involvement with communism, for one to be considered actually at that time Indonesia and its government – Soekarno’s government to be precise – make bilateral cooperation with these two countries, which include student trade or scholarship that allowed youngster from both country became foreign student. So, many of them didn’t know anything about PKI or being involved with the movement actually.

Aidit, Chairman of PKI, was hunted and shot by the army. No one knew where the location of his tomb was till now, whereas in 1945 Aidit is one of the youth who participate in securing Soekarno-Hatta to Rengasdengklok together with Karni cs, where they forced Bung Karno to declare the independence of Indonesia immediately.

After PKI crushed to the ground, Suharto step in and took over the government of Indonesia, base on Supersemar legacy and eventually ruled for 32 years, while G30S PKI remains controversy and mystery to the public.

  1. The Brutal Rape of Sum Kuning (1970)

On 18 September 1970 Sumarijem (Sum Kuning) who was on aged 18 years is awaiting for the arrival of the bus at the roadside before she suddenly dragged into a car by several men. In the car Sum were given drugs so she was unconscious when they taking her to a house in Klaten and gang-raped her until she fainted.

After that she was left on the roadside, Sum Kuning went to the police and make report. Instead of having good assisted, Sum was charge to be prime suspect of making a false report because she insisted one of the youths who raped her was the son of state officials, even one of them was the son of revolution hero.

In her confession to reporters, Sum told the reason why she told different version earlier, it’s because she was afraid of the threat of getting electrocuted if she’s being stubborn and not complied with their version. She even told about how police ordered her to get undress because they want to seek for tattoo or mark of hammer and sickle on her body, as a mark that was had by the member of PKI. She even accused as Gerwani (woman organization of Indonesian Communist Party) because her case involving VIP’s son, at that time PKI still hunted hardly.

The case was investigated by the police chief at the time, Hoegeng, by forming a special team called Investigation Team of Sum Kuning in January 1971. This case grows like a snowball, finally President Suharto take over the case from Hoegeng with orders that the case will be handled by Investigation team of Kopkamtib Center.

It was something extraordinary because the real task of Kopkamtib is to handle special political issues that are considered harmful to the state. Hoegeng then retired as police chief on October 2, 1971, some of the vote thinks it was an attempt to close the case. And they were right because the police didn’t catch the real rapists and their identity kept unanswered.

  1. Tanjung Priok Riots (1984)
In mid-1984 appears a bill that requires the application of social organizations a single principle of Pancasila. This raises the implication that some ‘mubaligh’ or preachers convey a message on these issues as controversial topic in Indonesia, including in Mushollah As-Sa'adah, Tanjung Priok.

The mass gathered before
Tanjung Priok riot started
They argued that the sole principle of Pancasila eventually could lead to the prohibition to carry out the correct teachings of Islam, including the ban on wearing ‘jilbab’ or headscarves and others. The Government views this as an act of provoking the public as seditious and SARA. The fever had swept the atmosphere of society in that year.

Triggers of the riots began on September 7, 1984 when a non-commissioned officer, Sergeant Harmanu come to the mushollah and ordered to revoke pamphlet containing the text of Muslims’s problem and the announcement of upcoming teaching activities.

The next day he came again with his colleagues to check whether his ordered was implemented. On his second coming, a rumors spread that there was a military who insulted the honor of the holy place by entering the mushollah without taking off his shoes and flushing the pamphlets with sewage.

The congregation members of recitation were asked Koramil officials to negotiate the problem and find the best solution for both side but it goes to arguing each other and suddenly there was combustion of motor belonging to soldiers who were also Marines. Four people who suspected as provocateur were captured and taking down to police station.

Mass made up of 1500 people from the surrounding angry then went to the police and military station, demanding the release of those four men. The clash between military and civilian can’t be prevented, after that 400-500 people were count as died.

  1. Semanggi Tragedy 2 (1999)
The grief of Semanggi tragedy has not been exhausted in May 1998 when on 24-28 September 1999 the similar tragedy repeating on the exact place when the soldiers replies their violence to students in stopping their opposition over governments.

Rejection was triggered by the displacement of transitional government at that time to issue a Law on State of Emergency Countermeasures (UU PKB) with its material that, according to many people and student, gave vast space for military to impose the country state in the interests of the military.

Students then move in large numbers to make demonstration on streets, and unfortunately for students who have always been victims because they lost their democracy fighters once again named Yun Hap who’s getting shot.

  1. Arsenic for Munir (2004)
Munir Said Thalib, known as the enforcement of human rights activist Munir is an iconic in Indonesia since he handled several cases of violations such as the disappearance of 24 activists and students in Jakarta (1997-1998), the murder of civilians in Tanjung Priok (1984), the shooting of student in Semanggi Tragedy 1 and 2 (1998 and 1999), the subversive case of Sri Bintang Pamungkas and Dita Indah Sari, murder of three farmers of nypa in Madura (1993), and many other cases.

7 September 2004 noticed as a date of Munir death on a flight to Den Haag, Netherland, with Garuda Airlines. He went to Dutch to continue his study in Master education of humanitarian law at Utrecth.

The chronological is like this, when the plane transit at Changi Airport, Singapore, at 00:40 local time the passengers are welcome to wait for a while. Several witnesses’ saw Munir waiting on Room Gate of D42, but another said he’s sitting in Coffee Bean along with Pollycarpus and Ongen Latuihamallo.

As the plane continued the flight, Munir met doctor Tarmizi. Both had a chat so the doctor knew Munir was sick. He asked for sweet tea added with slight of salt to the flight attendant. Five minutes later Munir went to the toilet and vomited, Tarmizi saw it as a clear liquid that doesn’t emit odors.

Tarmizi led her back into the seat, but two hours later back he went back to the toilet. He’s gone too long so the doctor got suspicious and ventured to the toilet. He was surprised to see Munir slumped helplessly then injected 5 mg of diazepam in Munir’s right shoulder, but he kept shoot and defecation, fell asleep after the injected rugs started to react.

Around 12:10 hours at lunch turned out that there was a salivate-no-foam came out from his mouth while his palms turned blue. It was then when Munir declared dead and two hours later when the plane landed at the airport of Schipool, Amsterdam, Munir's body evacuated. From the autopsy they found arsenic that exceeds the limits of reasonableness inside his body.

Munir's death remains a mystery until now. Newly only Pollycarpus and Indra Setiawan become convicted but the authorities are not able to investigate the involvement of senior officials of military who were believed to be the mastermind of the murder of the activist.

Mystery might be part of September and by remembering all of tragedies there might be hope so it won’t happened again in the future as we want to enjoy this month peacefully till the ends of September…
