THE USE OF POISON IN HORROR MOVIES

The prime suspect of 
poison coffee murder: Jessica Wongso

Murder by poison had caught many attentions in Indonesia for the past few months since the death of Wayan Mirna and her friend, Jessica Kumala Wongso. It already gets 8 rounds of trials, the last one on July 28, 2016, and the next will be on 10 August. The tense increased in each time.

I'm not interested in discussing who’s the killer is or how the murder was committed because the emotions and the gesture already show it all, but what I want to discuss is about murder by poison.

It’s frightening indeed to see people killed or committed suicide by poison in reality, other case we could see about the death of Munir, where the reaction gave a terrible nightmare not only for the victim but also the person who saw it.

But like it or not murdering someone by giving poison was one of the old ways to do it, here are some of the cases:

• Socrates - Greek philosopher (399 BC) was sentenced to death by drinking a toxic brew of hemlock

• Dmitry Shemyaka (1453) Grand Duke of Moscow was poisoned with arsenic by a secret agent named Vasily Tyomniy

• Madge Oberholtzer (1925), a rape victim of KKK leader, DC. Stephenson, who were poisoned by mercury (II) chloride

• Heinrich Himmler (1945) the leader of Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS) were killed by cyanide capsule after being captured by the allies.

• Ibn al-Khattab (2002), a Sunni Jihad fighters who died after receiving a poisonous letter that sent by the Russian secret service, FSB.

Obviously poison is also common thing in horror movie though I found out that the antagonist who used poison to kill their victims considered as a pussy, a coward-low level-thing that was not attractive to watch. No wonder a poison used in horror movie is only to paralyzing the opponents before they commit murder in a more brutal way. The film that used toxins are:

RUMAH DARA

Rumah  Dara (2010) or House of Dara tells about a group of young people who are stuck in the house of a mysterious killer named Dara. At dinner at the house of Dara, all guesses that eat the dishes were fainted because the food had been given by poison. After they all unconscious, they were dragged into the basement where the terror happened there. They were all killed but there’s one person who managed to escape.

PINTU TERLARANG

Pintu Terlarang or Forbidden Door was based on the novel with the same title that tells about the dark life of a sculptor named Gambir and his wife, Talyda. There’s a scene when Gambir invite all those closest at dinner to welcome Christmas. 

At dinner, Gambir put a poison into the wine that served with the food that called Devilish Pit. It makes those who drink paralyzed for ten minutes and could only see and hear a thing which gave Gambir perfect time to kill them all in horrible way. To be honest, I prefer the version in the novel rather than the movie.

MISTERIUS

The antagonist on Misterius or Mysterious used poison not to killed the main character but to kille herself as a past before turning a ghost. Sumiyati is in a relationship with a young man and that man left her after she’s pregnant. 

Sucipto, Sumiyati’s boss who also the parent of that young man, expelled Sumiyati because of that disgrace. Unable to bear the pressure, Sumiyati ends her life by drinking poison insects and became a ghost that terrorizing Sucipto’s house eventually. Though she drunk the poison but for me what was done by that young man actually drive the chaos and he’s the one who poisoned Sumiyati indirectly.

THE LAST SUPPER

The film that released in 1995, tells of five students who experienced the mental illness. They lived together in a house. At dinner along with a war veteran, they accidentally killed him. They make a crazy plan then to invite some people to argue with them. If the man doesn’t agree with their view, their drink will be poisoned and they will die instantly at the dinner table. This is an attempt to divert the pretext of the actual murder.

THE SIXTH SENSE

Film production in 1999 is the best work of writer-director M.Night Shyamalan. This movie displays the surprising ending and one of the best in the row of Hollywood films of all time. The character of Cole, a boy who has a sixth sense that can see spirits and communicate with the dead. With the help of a psychologist, Cole has revealed the death of a little girl named Kyra. The neighborhood thought her dead was caused by certain diseases, Kyra turned out to be poisoned by his stepmother who put the liquid poison in the soup that was eaten by Kyra.
