Last week I spoke to my old
friend, Fransisca Sacleux, who lived in France at present days. We talk a lot
about our activities and the place she lived was on Bourg des Comptes, to be
honest I never heard that place but it’s about 4 hours from Paris, and she
asked me to visited there, a countryside town filled with field views as I
imagine, to look the beautiful scenery and perhaps watch the movie as
well...because, you know, French is one of the countries that produces good
movie, including horror movies.
I watched French movie a
couple of times, but the difficulties was I don’t understand the language so
mostly I just enjoying the picture and the scene, which I thought was almost
equal to Hollywood. From that conversation I thought that maybe I should make
opinion about movie from there as well, so I tried so hard to seek a movie that
had English sub and turned out that Martyrs have it. What a coincidence because
this film, that was released in 2008, was tremendous one.
The film started with the
escaped of young girl named Lucy from horrible place that had her abuse. Later
on the next fifty years, she came back to the house where she’s being
captivated with her friend, Anna, undermine the peace of some harmonize family
who live in that house with a shoot gun which killed them all. Anna found out
the wife still alive and intends to help her but Lucy caught them first, the
fight occurred between them, and in the middle of that scared creature came to
hurt Lucy but Anna only saw Lucy was just hurting herself. Barely stand the
mental torture, Lucy slit her own throat and died on Anna’s arm.
Evidently their action reveal
a another secret which hidden for so long under the house, Anna found other
girl who also had been torture in the room below the house, she was hostage and
filled with scar and bruises, not to mention strange metal contraption that
attached to her head and lower body. After that, several strangers came in a
sudden to clean all the mesh and dead body inside the house. Anna met the
leader known as Mademoiselle who explain that she belong to secret society that
want to discover the secret of afterlife through the creation of a ‘Martyr’.
It turned out that the society
was responsible for the abduction of so many young girls that they used as an
experiment object, and the wife of the family was also responsible for doing
such nasty thing. Their experiment inflict so many act which involved violent
and torture to young woman, they believe suffering could brought those girl
into transcendental insight through the world beyond reality, but so far their
experiment failed and only create ‘victim’ not a ‘martyr’. From many photos of
‘Martyr’, Mademoiselle showing the eye of a real martyrs who look different
from ordinary people...their eyes glance with hope, relieve, and peace...as
they’re seeing the heaven with their physical own eyes and felt nothing of the
world around them...
Well, it reminds me of Jesus
who look above into the sky before He died on the cross. Maybe the sight that
He had was what mentioned by the pig fat lady, considering He’s the first
Martyr on earth. Another Martyr for example was St. Stephen, a man who died
stoned by Israelis, he also staring at the sky and before he died he said that
he saw Heaven and God who sit on the throne. Again, there are seeing part
following a Martyr.
I’m a little bit confuse here
about the term, this film define ‘Martyr’ as someone who witness life beyond
this one through the prosecution or pain torture before dying – same like Jesus
and St. Stephen right? – according to Greek’s, while on the other hand I thought
‘Martyr’ was someone that willing to die in order to defend what his or her
faith or belief in, not just because they seeing Heaven with physical eyes but
died in vain. I don’t know about you guys but I gave that decision to
yourself...
Anyway, it was Anna who became
their next experiment, this film truly lack of dialogues and complicated plot
but it showing us what was pain horror really was. The terror every time she
heard the stair moving down to the room where she’s being locked, the cruel
treatment she’s got every time the new torturer couples treat her...there
always abuse, punches, harsh meal time, smacking, choking, kicking, humiliation,
and living a life in an iron chain shackles that forced her to take a leak on
the bucket beneath her chair.
For my opinion, this was live
as hell it was, being locked for months or maybe years and experiencing such
torture...maybe what happened to a youngster in a ‘Hostel’ movie was better
because the torture caused them death, not to creating weird moment to separate
your soul from what your physical body had felt, like they did on Anna when
they flayed her alive on what they called next level.
