EXTINCTION

After the perfect performance of Jacob Tremblay playing the role as Cody in Before I Wake, I love how Quinn McColgan plays as Lu on this film. She had to deal with the situation where no child can bare, she grows on a situation where child on her age no longer existed and had to deal with daddy who lived solitude, hate the neighbor with reason she can’t understand, and has several strict rules to obey.

After the catastrophic occurred with a virus turns lots of people in world to zombie a small group of survivors moving to a place that covered with snow every time, they believe that the virus died out in such cold temperature and that’s the only way to keep human race from extinction. Few of them were Jack and Patrick who live in a side-by-side house but never talk each other. A high fence becomes a symbol that no one had to cross just to say as a friendly neighborhood and it stays that way for 9 years after the big tragedy.

Jack has a 9 years old daughter named Lu who started to curious about the things around the house and she bounds with Patrick’s dog outside the fence. The girl often gave the dog chocolate which quite unnecessary or you can call it simple mistake because chocolate killed dogs. Every dog keepers knows that it stomach were reluctant with that, especially if you gave him that much.

Anyway, Lu also become interested with her neighbor, Patrick, who seemed eccentric because he always doing this radio-announcer thing every night with his broadcast equipment that pronounce songs he’s been playing and his oration through the loudspeaker outside his house, which very annoying for Jack because it disturbed his sleep.

The big difference between Patrick and Jack’s way of life to survive was Jack rely on food supplies of canned food while Patrick always hunt living things like rabbit or deer and enjoying fresh meat every day. 

So one day when Patrick been following a trail of half eaten fox unto the old building outside the town he realize that the virus-infected-monster was able to survive from cold and it came back to hunt human. It follows him when he tried to get away but he’s got an accident when he hits a fallen tree.

Patrick realized the thing doesn’t have a vision when it stops while looking down on him, instead it ears start moving when it hears the gun shot from Jack’s house because he’s been practicing there. 

Patrick went back home and tried to warn Jack by firing his arms off. His shot attract the infected monster and both see when Patrick attacked by that monster. Lu beg her dad to shoot the monster in order to save Patrick but he hesitate to do that and it makes Patrick’s dog comes and attack the monster to save his keeper.

Patrick got bitten on his neck and his dog was killed, Lu was furious to see her dad did nothing, Jack only stood on his yard and point his shotgun but never pull the trigger. 

So later that night Lu went outside the house and crossing the fence to put flower on the dog’s grave but a monster was awaiting for her. Jack tried to save Lu but the monster injured him. Patrick came and save them, and he able to tied up the infected to learn about their evolution.

He realized that even though they were technically infected but the infection was harmless because none of them turned into zombie, and though the infected losing their sight but they have enhanced hearing.

On the next day, Lu asked Jack to invite Patrick over for dinner and he agrees. On that dinner we could see the cause of hostility between Jack and Patrick from their past.  Patrick said that he had someone respond on his radio call and asked them to come. They go to the warehouse to pick up supplies and Lu sees a woman in the distance that finally brought home by them.

Later she told Patrick and Jack about how she and her group could come to their place, as they heard Patrick’s call on radio and got attack by many of the infected on their way there. At that time she heard the howling of an infected Patrick had caught and shot it to death because it’s the way they call each other. They start to board up the house when they hear howling respond in the distance, realize that the monsters were back after all this years to hunt man down.

The battle took place inside the house when too many monster lurking into it but they could contained them for while with loud sound the woman had plays using Patrick’s broadcast equipment, but the generator starts to run out of gas so they have to find another way out and that’s moment where Patrick realized that he had to do heroic thing for Lu, which is actually her biological daughter…
